On Friday, June 5, Hughes Elementary School marked an incredible milestone by celebrating its Centennial Birthday with a beautiful, memorable ceremony. The historic event kicked off with a stunning presentation of colors by the Proctor ROTC, followed by Mayor Galime opening the celebration with a rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner. The Hughes student body was joined by distinguished local leaders, including Board of Education member Tennille Knoop, alongside Common Council members Heather Wasielewski and Joe Betar, the latter of whom presented the school with a special city proclamation. Highlighting the celebration of our rich Utica City School District history, the Student Council flawlessly hosted the day's events, which featured a living timeline, deep dives into the school's past, and wonderful musical performances by the Hughes Choir. It was an unforgettable day that brought generations together, welcoming back many cherished alumni and retired teachers to honor a century of educational excellence at Hughes Elementary.
